Holidays in Zermatt

We decided to spend Easter in Zermatt, so we could enjoy the perfect romantic atmosphere of the city and say goodbye to the ski season with style. We also had another good reason: I was celebrating my 30 years’ birthday on Easter Sunday!

Arriving and booking

As we live in Geneva, it was very easy to go to Zermatt by train and our trip lasted 3 hours and 45 minutes, with one connection. How amazing is it to travel by train? We loved it!

The city is cute and small, and it was easy to reach our hotel from the train station by foot. We chose the Hotel Antika, a cozy place with great value for money: the location is excellent (next to the bus stop to the ski stations), the breakfast is delicious and they also have a small spa, which is great after a ski day. The room was very comfortable and for us it had all the structure necessary for a really great and romantic holiday.

The village: A ski resort with a cool atmosphere

Luckily, we arrived on a sunny day on Friday, so we could take lot of pictures of the one and only Matterhorn mountain, the famous Toblerone. The city center has all the cute things you can imagine of a ski village: traditional alpine chalets, local restaurants, luxury and local stores, cafes with blankets on the chairs and bars. One thing you can be sure: they do know how to have fun during winter!

For our first dinner night, we wanted a local place but still with affordable price, so we chose the restaurant of the Hotel Alpenrose. It’s a simple and welcoming space with friendly staff and delicious food, and it was perfect for the moment. We had the veal sausage and the cheese and egg croûte and I recommend both meals. The view outside is also pretty great and I can imagine how amazing it is also to have a drink looking at the Matterhorn mountain on a sunny afternoon.

Another restaurant I should recommend to you is Spycher, a cozy and delicious place we chose to celebrate my birthday on Easter Sunday. Their specialties are flambeed dishes and we order the flambee snails for starter. I must say that we loved and it was my favorite plate of the dinner, the flavors were special! If you like snails, don’t forget to order. We also had the duck with honey sauce and the house special “Three meats and three sauces” – everything delicious! All staff were very nice and the red Swiss wine that they recommended was perfect and it went very well with our meals. If you want a special restaurant, you won’t be sorry.

Another thing I must say, it is an amazing Swiss tradition to post their menus with prices in the internet. It’s a great way to compare prices and chose your restaurant for the day.

Also, don’t forget to make a reservation – Most of times it’s difficult to get a table without it.

It’s all about ski and Toblerones!

As you can imagine, the structures for those who want to ski or just visit the mountains are impressive. To start our ski weekend, we bought the ski pass for 2 days, which includes the Gornergrat Bahn railway, the second highest railway in Europe. The ride has amazing views until the top of Gornegrat mountain and it is worth with ski boots or not!

Gornergrad_zermatt_april07_(34)

The Gornergrat Bahn railway

With the same ski pass, we visited the Sunnega and Matterhorn stations, with and without skis. That’s why we think it is worth to buy the ski pass (and not only the Gornergrat train ticket) even if you’re not skiing, so you can enjoy the lifts and get to know as many stations as you want. Hiking trails are also an excellent option to appreciate the view!

As a beginner skier (I started to learn how to ski last season), I don’t have too much experience to tell about the ski stations or witch ski slope is the best or the worst, but I felt a little more difficult than the French ski stations. Also, we must consider that April is almost the end of the season, so the snow and the slopes aren’t exactly the perfection, especially in the end of afternoon.

Don’t forget the après-ski

I bet that this is the best part for everybody: to relax in a cool ambient, with fun music and, of course, great drinks. After a day of ski and lot of snow, don’t miss the après-ski all around the town. We went to Papperla Pub two times for the great vibe, good beer and refreshing Aperol Spritz. You can start your happy hour there by afternoon and spend the night in the inside bar when the night gets colder.

Zermatt, we will be back!

Definitely, these holidays were all about having fun. The true charm of Zermatt is that it can be a romantic trip for two, an excellent family time or even stay on a chalet full of friends, the city fits very well for all occasions. So, do not hesitate to book your next winter travel there! We loved it!

If you have any doubts about Zermatt, leave your comment or send us an email to contact.atelier1202@gmail.com. We’ll be extremely happy to help!

CARNIVAL IN BRAZIL – HOW TO “JUMP IT” LIKE A LOCAL

Covers CARNIVAL RIO

As everybody knows, Carnival is the most famous festival in Brazil, which attracts thousands of people every year. This is the perfect time to enjoy the sun, the music and that unmistakable Brazilian vibe. It’s amazingly fun and a great anti-stress source (especially during winter if you are from the northern part of the world!). If you’re not Brazilian, add to this experience great food and very friendly people. That’s why we decided to make a guide so tourists can appreciate Carnival like a local, “jumping it” from block to block!

The reason is very simple: We know that it can be hard to understand everything happening at the same time in the middle of all costumes, confetti and parades, but we can guarantee it is worth it and we will make you fall in love with this unique party too!

For the past several years, we have been experiencing the most popular carnivals in Brazil (yes! first tip: there are several different carnival festivals in Brazil and you have to try as many as you can!) We’ve been to: Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Olinda, Florianópolis and São Paulo. You will find different kinds of parties in each of these places, but we will start with the most internationally famous one: Rio de Janeiro.

CARNIVAL #1: RIO DE JANEIRO

Carnival = Rio, right? It can be! The Rio Carnival Parade is famous all around the world and it is a big contest between several schools, where a team of 12 schools forms the Special Group (just like the main league in sports – there are lower leagues as well!). These schools are extremely popular and have the most elaborate costumes and allegorical cars.

For the big show, everything is created months in advance, made by people of the community who really love the school. Each year, the schools chose their own themes and their samba anthem, and this choice will illustrate their show which lasts from 65 to 82 minutes.

These are some pictures that illustrate all the magic:

You can watch the parade at the Rio’s Sambodromo (stadium-like structure), and it always happens on the Sunday and Monday before Carnival (remember that Carnival official date is always on a Tuesday).

Unfortunately, to date (2017), you cannot directly buy your ticket to the parade (unless you have a friend living in Rio to phone in), so you will need to buy it with one of the agencies providing tickets. Be sure to check prices and the agencies’ trustworthiness. In 2017, prices varied from R$ 190 to R$ 300 (before agency costs).

Now, if you want to have the experience of participating in the parade, wearing costumes and dancing a lot of samba, the schools offer the costumes for purchase (you can buy them with the same agencies). But remember: It is very fun but also takes a lot of responsibility: You must arrive on time, dance and smile during the whole show, and order the costume / inform your size far in advance. Also, learn the samba anthem and sing along!

IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT THE PARADES! (it is actually not at all about it for most of us!)

For us, the most fun part of the Carnival at Rio is actually on the streets: You can follow the “blocks” (big musical cars or simply playing bands) free of charge and enjoy the beautiful view of the city while partying.

The “blocks” are groups that you can follow on the streets, and the schedule is huge, there are a lot of groups to follow from morning till night, all over town.

Nowadays, you can find from the most traditional blocks, with traditional Carnival songs – the “marchinhas” – to the modern ones that mix the Carnival rhythm with other musical styles such as rock and pop. My tip is to mix them so you can enjoy all styles of music and people!

Yes, we know that explaining this party can be hard, so check out the videos that show these vibes (click on the captions to see the videos):

Traditional block:

simpatia eh quase site blobo folia

Block Simpatia é quase amor

Modern block:

uol sargento

Block Sargento Pimenta

The most popular blocks are also the most crowded. The block Cordão da Bola Preta, for example, was founded in 1918 and attracts about one million people at Lapa, a bohemian neighbourhood. You can go, but please, arrive early!

You also must consider that there are blocks happening all around, in every neighbourhood.

For the traditional blocks, I suggest these ones:

Banda de Ipanema (at Ipanema beach, wonderful and fun)

Areia (at Leblon, usually starts in the morning and it is also amazing)

Simpatia é quase amor (also at Ipanema)

Recently, there are also the modern blocks and it is always fun to hear a song that you love in a samba rhythm. Our favorites are:

New Kids on The Bloco (the name says everything: 80s and 90s Pop music from bands such as Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys and Maroon 5 with a twist)

Sargento Pimenta (Sargent Pepper in Portuguese, you can dance to The Beatles songs while trying to samba –  everybody loves it!)

Thriller Elétrico (Michael Jackson, Brazilian style)

To see the schedule of the blocks (be prepared, there are SO many!), you can check websites such as Wiki Rio and also install some apps on your cell phone. Click here to see an example of this year’s blocks.

BE PREPARED…

To enjoy the perfect street Carnival in Rio, make sure to follow these tips:

*Use a Money Belt

The streets get crowded and this item is really indispensable.

* Carry small money change

It is very easy to buy beer and drinks on the streets while following the music, but make it simple and quick

* If possible, take your oldest cell phone

Taking photos is amazing, but be careful with pickpockets. Again, the streets usually get crowded and pickpocket is a reality.

* Enjoy the morning blocks

They are usually very traditional and calmer (most of the time). It’s a good chance also to bring kids.

* Drink a lot of water and wear sunblock!

This one can seems obvious, but the party will has a lot of sun, beers and caipirinhas, and you don’t want to get sick in the first day of the event!

* Install the Uber app (or a similar app)

As everywhere, taxis can be cruel, especially with tourists. After a day of party, is important to go home safely! (taxi drivers in Rio are known to be particularly cranky)

*Book your stay in a good region

Although not the warzone you’d expect from watching TV or movies, Rio can be dangerous and you’ll feel much safer if you stay in a good region. We aren’t saying what are the better or worst places because Rio is entirely beautiful, but it is better to avoid headaches. Stick with the basics and book a place on Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon for instance. Take also mobility into consideration!

THE MOST FUNNY AND COOL COSTUMES ARE ON THE STREETS!

In the street carnival (the “real” one if you ask us!), costumes are simpler but still with lots of creativity. Women and men use at least one accessory and the only rule here is to have fun! As we love fun outfits, we separated some ideas (but feel free to ask us for more next year!):

We hope we can help you to make this experience amazing! If you have any other doubt, leave your comment or send us an email to contact.atelier1202@gmail.com. We’ll be extremely happy to help!

My City Guide | Potsdam & Leipzig

potsdam-and-leipzig

If you read our Berlin City Guide, you know that, during our vacations in Berlin, we also made two day trips, to Potsdam and Leipzig.

Both cities are very close to Berlin and are easy to access, so if you have some extra days in the capital of Germany, this is a great option to know cute and historical cities.

When

We went to Berlin in December for the Christmas markets and the New Year´s Eve Party, but we also put aside two days for these day trips. Yes, it is winter in December and it´s cold, but I am sure you will have fun drinking Glühwein (hot wine) even with lots of coats!

Day trip #1: Potsdam

Potsdam is the capital of the state of Brandenburg and is located just 40km from Berlin. The city was a residence of the Prussian kings and the German Kaiser until 1918, so expect to see amazing constructions and palaces.

The palaces are already worth the day trip and it´s a very pleasant walk visiting them and their gardens even during winter. I imagine how great it is during spring!

The amazing Neues Palais | Pictures: Atelier 1202

The Neues Palais (New Palace) was commissioned by Frederick the Great, and it was made to impress its visitors. The construction was built in only 6 years and the rooms are really amazing. The whole history of Frederick the Great is very impressive and interesting, so learning more about it in this beautiful place was such an experience!

Another must-visit palace is Sanssouci, Frederick the Great´s summer palace, a great construction in rococo style, with more rooms made to impress and a beautiful garden where you can walk and imagine how the king was so rich and powerful at that time!

The Cecilienhof was another amazing discovery, a palace famous for being the location of the Potsdam Conference in 1945, where the heads of government of the Soviet Union, United Kingdom and the United States signed the treaties dividing Germany and ending the Second World War.

After visit the palaces, we went to the center of Potsdam and discovered a delicious surprise: The Christmas Market is huge, pretty amazing and with a lot of options to eat, drink, buy and play! But don´t worry: even if you´re going in another season, the center is absolutely cute with a lot of stores, restaurants and coffees, so you will not regret!

How to go from Berlim?

From Berlin, the easiest (and cheapest!) way to get to Potsdam is by taking line S7 of the S-Bahn 7 (the local train line in Berlin) all the way to its final stop at Potsdam, Hauptbahnhof. It costs 3.40 euros and takes around 25 minutes to get there.

Tip 1: If you are going to visit the Sanssouci palaces and park, you should take another train at Potsdam, Hauptbahnhof and drop at Postdam Park Sanssouci Bhf (2 stops). This is the stop nearer to the new palace (“Neues Palais”) and there is usually less queue to buy tickets for both palaces there. So you get to visit the new palace, walk “back” through the beautiful park towards the Sanssouci palace and it is much easier to take a bus back to the center of Potsdam from there! We were lucky and there was a train leaving in the direction of Park Sanssouci Bhf the moment we got in Potsdam main station!

Tip 2: Potsdam is in zone C, so you will have to buy a ticket even if you have the Berlin card/pass for zones A and B.

 Day trip #2: Leipzig

Leipzig was an important trade fair center since medieval times, and today the city is still dynamic and a center of art and culture. Imagine the home of Bach, Goethe and Mendelsson, medieval constructions and a lot of history to tell. In other words, a lot of things happen there all the time!

The city has a lot of museums and constructions to visit, but our favorites were St. Nicholas Church (built in the 12th century), the Battle of the Nations Monument (one of the largest monuments of Europe) and the St. Thomas Church (the most famous place where Bach worked as music director). You also can see a great statue of Bach in front of the church.

The city center is very interesting and I was impressed by the quantity of stores this city has, from small creators to giants such as Zara and Primark.

We had lunch at Brauhaus an der Thomaskirche, a traditional and family restaurant that serves German food and beer, everything was delicious and the service was quick, so I recommend if you´re fancy for a typical meal!

img-20161227-wa004120161227_140553

The delicious German meals: Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) and the Roulade (stuffed meat)

How to go from Berlim?

From Berlin you can take a bus or a train to Leipizig, but the bus is much cheaper! We bought a ticket at Flixbus, which is a very convenient coach company. They have an app which makes all the process that much easier (we didn’t even have to print our tickets). There were several options going from Berlin, with some variation regarding price and place of departure/arrival.

We took an early bus leaving Berlin Central Bus Station at 8:30 arriving at Leipzig central station at 10:40. We came back the same way leaving Leipizig at 17:30, but arriving at Berlin Südkreuz station at 19:45. Berlin Central Bus Station is a little bit outside the city, but not really that far, especially if you are staying around Kurfürstendamm or Charlottenburg area (to get there we took a bus from Savignyplatz).

We preferred to come back by Südkreuz though because it was connected with the subway and we knew we would arrive back at night. The bus is very comfortable and left only a few minutes behind schedule. The time we stayed in Leipzig was enough to get a good feel of the city.

I hope you like these tips and enjoy Potsdam and Leipzig as much as we did! See you on the next #mycityguide!

My City Guide | Berlin

city-guide-berlin-cover-2

I don´t know why, but I always wanted to go to Berlin. Maybe because I love big cities, or its famous underground flair or even because of  its huge historical baggage, everything seemed very attractive to me. So, we decided to go there for New Year´s vacation to celebrate 2017 and enjoy the German winter and, guess what? We found a very democratic city that fits in all lifestyles. Check all our discoveries and get inspired:

When?

From December 25th to January 1st – We were looking for some place fun for New Year´s Eve and decided to go to one of the parties that the city offers, a very good idea, I must say!

Where to stay

Berlin is a big city, so I don´t believe that there is only one good place to book. We stayed at Berlin Plaza Hotel (in the west area), and we loved the location because it is very central and has a lot of stores, restaurants and supermarkets. It is right next to Kurfürstendamm Street and public transports accesses, such as U-Bahn station Uhlandstrasse and the S-Bahn station Savignyplatz. Besides that, is very easy to get to the airport.

Regarding the hotel, the rooms were clean and comfortable for a couple, the staff was very kind and the breakfast was delicious and full of options. We definitely recommend it!

My top 5ive – Awesome things to do

It was my first time, so I decided to check in the main spots. Here´s my top five favorites:

PERGAMONMUSEUM

pergamonmuseum

Picture: Pergamonmuseum

This museum is situated on the Museum Island, and you can find there great constructions as the Pergamon Altar and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon. Everything is huge and you get out of there at least impressed. Tip: Arrive there early, if possible 30 minutes before opening, or take a long line!

BERLIN CATHEDRAL

The construction is amazing and you can appreciate a beautiful view from its rooftop. It is always nice to see the city from the top.

An amazing outdoor gallery made in a preserved part of the Berlin Wall. It´s a must see if you like graffiti, art and history.

CHECKPOINT CHARLIE & CHECKPOINT CHARLIE MUSEUM

Picture: Atelier 1202

It is amazing how such a huge part of history happened only a few decades ago. The museum is not very well organized, it’s true, but there´s a lot of information and stories of the many who tried to escape. It is worth if you enjoy Berlin Wall´s history and have time to take a long visit.

CHARLOTTENBURG PALACE

Personally, it is always nice to visit a palace! You have beautiful things to see and a good history guaranteed. This is the largest palace of Berlin, built at the end of 17th century in baroque and rococo styles. You can learn more about the interesting history of Friedrich III, known as Frederick the Great, and his eccentricity.

OUR SPECIALS

There are two galleries, one completely different from another, but both very nice to visit and we couldn’t fail to mention them:

Hackesche Höfe is actually a courtyard complex with eight interconnected courtyards where you can find the cutest stores in a very agreeable area.

Pictures: Atelier 1202

Rosenthaler Strabe is also a courtyard in the center of Berlin, but there you can see street art all around the walls and the ambient is really amazing and impressive. Go upstairs to check the store full of books and posters.

Eat & Drink

If you love, like us, German food, you´ll always find some nice place to eat sausages, potato salad and pork´s knuckle, but the truth is that Berlin is so international that you can find so much more than that: Be prepared to see lots of Thailand and Vietnamese food, for example. If you visit the city during the end of year, don´t miss the Christmas Markets, always full of delicious food. Another not-to-miss dish is the Curryworst – really, the sausages are the best!

OUR SPECIALS

For German food, an excellent option is the Marjellchen, a cozy familiar restaurant with delicious food and service amazing. We ordered the traditional Wiener schnitzel and the stewed meat of pork, and both were exceptional. Trust us, you will not leave there disappointed.

Go to Chao, a Vietnamese restaurant which we really loved: Amazing food in a really nice ambient and very friendly staff. The price was very good too, so it was perfect for us. The noodle soup and fried noodle were delicious, but the tapas were superb!

img-20161231-wa0047

The tapas at Chao – Picture: Atelier 1202

At the Christmas markets, feel free to taste everything you deserve (after all, it´s cold outside!): Red and white hot wine (delicious), hot beer (it looked like wine, and has cherry flavor, but it´s ok), white hot chocolate and delicious street food.

Around Berlin

We also made two day trips, to Potsdam and Leipzig. Both small cities are very cute and have easy access for those hosted in Berlin. We´ll talk about them very soon on the next posts. Update: New #mycityguide Potsdam and Leipzig!

New Year´s Party at Berlin

As I said, we went to Berlin to enjoy the last week of the year and, specially, for the New Year’s Eve. We were looking for a really nice party with good music and drinks and, fortunately, we found it!

Before that, I have to say that there is a big street party event at the Brandenburg Gate area, with music presentations, food and DJs sets, and our first idea was to go there to see the fireworks before finishing the night at our closed party in a club. However, when we arrived at Brandenburg Gate around 21h, the police informed us that the space was already closed because it was already very crowded. After being a little disappointed, we went to our party and it was really amazing: Perfect amount of people, great music and easy access to open bar with delicious drinks. Another important point: It was right next to a subway station, to happily returning to the hotel.

We went to this party at Umspannwerk, but you can see more options at the official website.

Berlin is a big city with uncountable things to do for all ages and kind of travelers, it offers all kind of activities for all lifestyles and I am sure you will come back home full of inspiration for such creative city.

See you on the next trip!
